Throughout history, nature has been deeply intertwined with life in Pakistan, shaping our beliefs, traditions, and daily livelihoods. From ancient tales rooted in mysticism to the rhythms of farming life, wildlife and ecosystems have always been part of our cultural story.
Take the pangolin, for example — an elusive creature and, sadly, one of the most trafficked mammals on Earth. Beyond its ecological role, the pangolin holds a unique place in local folklore.
In the valleys of Azad Kashmir, people tell of the pangolin’s hidden protective powers. According to local belief, if a cow or buffalo wears a necklace made from its scales, it will remain fertile, and its calf will be safe from predators.
This tale reflects a deeper truth: the close bond between humans and the natural world. By valuing and protecting creatures like the pangolin, communities have long believed they are also safeguarding their farms, their animals, and, ultimately, their way of life.
