What is the Divine Spirit?

Wattayo Faqir

There was a religious gathering in which a discussion arose about the Divine Spirit. Wattayo was also present there.

The scholars and spiritual men present began to argue among themselves. “What is the Divine Spirit? What does the Divine Spirit mean?” Each one tried to offer his own explanation.

When Wattayo heard them say “Divine Spirit,” he exclaimed: “O brothers, what spirit? What divine spirit! The faqir (mystic) himself becomes the spirit!”

The people were surprised and asked: “Wattayo, what do you mean?”

He replied:

“When a person’s self (ego) departs, God’s spirit enters. But when a person’s self remains, then the Divine Spirit cannot stay within him. The house that is already full — how can another come to live there?”

Then he added:

“When you empty yourself of pride and desire, only then can the Divine Spirit dwell within you. Otherwise, as long as you are full of yourself, God’s spirit will find no space to reside.”

Wattayo Faqir is a folk sage from Sindhi folklore. He imparted wisdom nd th gift of intellect through his observations, reflections and interactions, in the simplest of words.
