Haari and Hass Pakhi

Farmer and swan

Once upon a time, in a village in Sindh, there lived a farmer who worked hard in his fields every day. One day, while he was working, he found a beautiful bird sitting near his crops. The bird was so lovely that the farmer decided to take it home with him.

The next morning, when the farmer woke up, he was shocked to find that the bird had laid a golden egg! Surprised and overjoyed, he took the egg to the city and sold it for a good sum of money. He returned home with the money and celebrated with his family.

The farmer said to his wife, "Take good care of this bird. Feed it well and look after it. This bird is a blessing for us! We must save the money we earn from the golden eggs."

The next morning, the bird laid another golden egg. The farmer sold it again and made more money. The same thing happened the third day. Every day, the bird would lay a golden egg, and the farmer's wealth kept increasing.

However, greed began to take over the farmer’s heart. He thought to himself, "Why wait for one egg every day? If I slaughter the bird, I can take out all the golden eggs from its belly at once and become rich instantly!"

Blinded by his greed, the farmer decided to kill the bird. But when he cut it open, he found nothing inside. There were no golden eggs in its stomach — only regret.

The farmer was devastated. He had lost the magical bird and his chance to keep earning golden eggs. Now, he had nothing left — neither the bird nor the money.

Feeling both sad and ashamed, he said to himself, "If only I hadn’t been so greedy! I could have continued selling one golden egg each day and lived happily. But my greed ruined everything."

Moral of the story: Greed is a curse.
