Bangles

Glass bangles are a part and parcel of every Pakistani girl's wardrobe. A mandatory accessory, for Eid, weddings, and any festive occasion. They're a symbol of happiness. Hyderabadi bangles in particular are famous for being exquisite.

The process of creating these exquisite adornments begins with collecting broken glass, often done by women, which is then melted at a high temperature of 1,400 °F (760 °C) until it becomes thin, viscous streaks. These streaks are transformed into bangle rolls using a roller.

The next phase, known as "jurai," involves joining the two ends of the bangle together over a flame. This step is crucial to form the complete circular shape.

Finally, in the stage of "meena kaari," finishing touches are added to the bangles. This can include glitter, gold water, and multicoloured crystals applied to the outer surface, enhancing their beauty.

Historical records indicate that modern-day glass bangle production originated in Firozabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. After Partition, many of these craftsmen migrated to Hyderabad, bringing their skills with them and local residents also embraced the art.

Pakistan's Choori Bazaar is a bustling wholesale market exclusively dedicated to bangles. Located south of the main Qila Chowk in Hyderabad, it attracts visitors with its vibrant display of handmade bangles. It is one of the longest bazaar's in Asia, stretching some 2kms.

Laad Bazaar, the Indian counterpart bangle market is also in Hyderabad city. It was built by the Qutub Shahis in the 1590s. Legend has it that Sultan Mohammad Quli Qutub Shah established Laad Bazaar to provide bridal trousseau items for his daughter's wedding.

As we celebrate the timeless attraction Hyderabadi glass bangles have to them, we must also acknowledge the poor working conditions for artisans. This includes being underpaid and health hazards. We must find safer ways to preserve traditional production methods! Life before all
